Smudge Sticks
Smudge Sticks, Smudging
Smudge sticks are used in the spiritual tradition called 'smudging', a practice which drives away negative energies. Although smudging is well known for its use in traditional Native American ceremonies, this is an art that has been practiced in various forms by cultures across the world including India, China, Australia and ancient Europe.
Smudging is used to drive away negative energies that accumulate over time through negative thoughts, emotions, illness and pain. This negative energy interferes with the healthy flow of positive energy and can have detrimental impacts on your life.
You can use smudging to cleanse yourself or others, a room, a whole building or any space. It is one of the most effective methods of space clearing and is often used in combination with other forms of space clearing such as bell ringing.
To undertake the ritual of space clearing using smudge you will need the following:
a smudge stick
a heat proof bowl
matches or a candle
a large feather
To smudge:
- Light the end of the smudge stick and let it burn until it starts to smoulder, then extinguish the flame.
- With the smouldering smudge stick in the bowl walk around each room using the feather to waft the smoke.
- State your intentions out loud or to yourself. This may be to drive away negativity and bring balance and harmony or you may have a more specific request.
Remember to ensure that windows are open so that there is ventilation if undertaking this ritual indoors.
